According to Robinho, Kuching is the 'Pork Capital of Malaysia'... that's the very first time someone describe Kuching that way.. and the first impression i have was a total confussion.. how can pork be connected to Kuching, Sarawak?!
(thinking....)
You see this is the animal before turning into a pork...
and...
This is Sarawak, as define by Wikipedia, one of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo. Known as Bumi Kenyalang (‘Land of the Hornbills’) and is situated on the north-west of the island.
Sarawak Bumi Kenyalang - The Land of Hornbills

hmm outsiders usually describe Sarawak as a land famous for its tropical rainforest and most importantly for the 40 over sub-ethnic groups, where each has their own unique culture, language and lifestyle.. and yes, this has lead to many East Malaysians thinking that we still live on trees and still wear leaves (@#$#%).... Can't blame them can we.. see how Sarawak Tourism Board promotes Sarawak...
*
But put that aside, how could people actually link pork and Sarawak together?!PORK = SARAWAK
This equation just look so wrong.
This equation just look so wrong.
And the image that keeps popping up my head, looks even worst...
But after digesting Robinho and Emm's entry, i do realize there is some truth to it... And below are my reasons:
1) The roasted piglet is a must in every dinner banquet.. wouldn't do without it..
2) The sweet juicy char siew bak pao is a comfort food for most Sarawakian.
3) The India Street Siew Bao where you can have it with yam or century egg. Take it with a cup of hot tea or coffee.. it will instantly transport you up to heaven :)
4) The really nice bbq pork rice where you have both the cha siew and the three layer pork ;D easily the most sort after quick lunch or dinner.
5) And of course the infamous kolo mee. You wouldn't get it any other way other than in Kuching. Toasted with pork oil and some vinegar and onion, top it up with char siew, some seafood and some vege, most Kuchingnian have it almost every other day. :D
and
6) Another infamous dish in Kuching, the Kueh Chap. Basically every part of pork is being cook to perfection and cut into bite-size pieces, mixed with pieces of kueh and add with sweet soya sos soup. This can really be your favourite dish if you're a pork lover. :D
You can get the above dishes easily in any parts of Kuching. So i guess Kuching is indeed a Pork Capital of Malaysia eh.. *grin
